Wendell — East Wake’s summer league baseball team raised a bit of noise last week with wins over Knightdale and Wakefield.
The junior and senior teams are comprised of some of the same players, something coach Kerry Kincaid said is going to give some of the guys a chance to step up their game. And some of them did Tuesday night against Knightdale in the 16-7 East Wake win.Jonathan Aparicio squeezed out a solo homer on his first at-bat and went 3-4 on the game with a single and a triple.Jacob Edwards scored three runs on two walks and a single — something Kincaid said the game was not lacking.Knightdale got the bat on the ball decently throughout the match, but as Kincaid said, many a batter were walked, giving East Wake plenty of opportunities to push forward.Eighth-grader Logan Jones pitched a strong start in the game and was followed by Jonathan Waszak. Knightdale couldn’t bat out the difference in the sixth inning and the game came to a close. In Thursday night’s senior game, Kincaid sent Aparicio, 14, of the junior team, to the mound to chuck for East Wake, and the results were better than average by anyone’s standard.Closing a 3-0 week for the Warriors, Aparicio pitched a one-hitter on nine strikeouts and threw what Kincaid said was an average ball in the 80s, maxing out around 87 mph. The assault on the catcher’s mitt left Wakefield with nowhere to hide, as East Wake rolled on to an 11-0 victory on the road.
